March 10th- Home Group Questions

Key Scriptures: Hebrews 6:13-18 (ESV)

Facilitator Questions:
Themes: God’s Word and His oath, truth and lies
Start thinking: Ask a question to get your group thinking.
  •  What is an oath? Why did God confirm His promise to Abraham with an oath?
  • What does God’s oath tell us about His character? Did He need to make it?
  • Proverbs 30:5 (ESV) says, “Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Compare this with Verse 18. How does God’s word give us a shield and strong encouragement to hold fast to our hope?
Start sharing: Choose a question to create openness.
  • Which promises in God’s Word do you especially hold onto? Why are they important to you?
  • Verse 16 says people swear by something greater than themselves, and an oath is final for confirmation. How well do you do what you say and say what you do?
  • James 3:6 says, “And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.” How does this verse humble you or encourage you to depend on God’s grace?
  • John 8:44 tells us that the devil is a liar and the father of lies. How can this verse help you be more honest and truthful?
  • As we have talked about this, how has the Spirit been teaching, guiding or correcting you?
Start praying: Be bold and pray with power.
  • Praise and thank God for being completely true and trustworthy.
  • Thank Jesus for being the Way, the Truth and the Life and for revealing the Father to you.
  • Confess your weakness in speaking truth. Ask the Holy Spirit to be your constant guide and helper to produce Godly character in you.
  • Pray that the Church will have discernment to know the truth, to speak it and to stand against lies, as God directs.
Start doing: Commit to a step and live it out this week.
  • Search the phrase “God is true” in an online Bible. Meditate prayerfully on what you find.
  • Memorize Psalm 19:14: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer” and Psalm 141:3: “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips.”
  • Pray daily that the Holy Spirit will keep you from believing and telling lies.
