Key Scriptures: John 14:26

Facilitator Questions:
Themes:
The person and the work of the Holy Spirit

Start thinking:  Ask a question to get your group thinking.
  • What is your understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and what He does? How does He operate in unity with the Father and the Son?
  • When you think about the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old and New Testaments, what comes to mind? How did the Spirit manifest Himself, and what did He bring about?
  • Jesus said in John 16:27, “. . . I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” Why is it better for us to have the Holy Spirit than to have Jesus’ physical presence with us?
  • In different Bible translations, the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Counselor and Strengthener. What do these words mean? How are they good descriptions of Him? Can you think of other words to describe Him?
  • Ephesians 4:30 says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” How do we grieve the Holy Spirit?
Start sharing:  Choose a question to create openness.
  • How do you know that the Holy Spirit is present and active in your life?
  • Tell about a time when you experienced the Holy Spirit’s guidance and support coming to you through other Christian believers. What happened or changed because of it?
  • What do you believe the Holy Spirit is currently saying to our church and to the Body of Christ in general? How are you responding to the Word He is giving us?
Start praying:  Be bold and pray with power.
  • Praise the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for who they are as three in one and for demonstrating perfect love and unity.
  • Thank the Holy Spirit for His active work in your life and in our community of believers.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you continually and have His way in your heart, so you can be empowered to walk in obedience and fellowship with God.
  • Repent of any ways you have grieved the Holy Spirit by hardening your heart against His prompting.
Start doing:  Commit to a step and live it out this week.
  • Memorize John 14:26.
  • Pray every day for a fresh infilling of the Spirit and for Him to lead you to serve God and others. Watch to see how He moves.
