Small Group Guide: "Foreigner"
Based on 1 Peter 2:9-16
Opening Prayer & Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Icebreaker Question: Share about a time when you felt like an outsider or "foreigner" in a situation. How did that experience shape you?
Discussion Questions:
Part 1: Understanding Our Identity
1. What does it mean to be a "foreigner" or "sojourner" in this world?** How should this identity change the way we live daily?
2. Peter lists four identities in verse 9: chosen family, royal priesthood, holy nation, God's possession. Which of these resonates most with you and why?
3. Pastor Rino mentioned that "most believers don't live in wonder." What keeps us from living in wonder of God? What would change if we truly embraced our identity as God's holy people?
Part 2: Living Differently
4. The sermon emphasized that people should see we're "not from here" by how we live. What are some practical ways our lives should look different from the world around us?
5. Discuss this statement: "Your love relationship with Jesus Christ ought to be our motivation to stay pure." How does viewing sin as "cheating" on our relationship with Jesus change your perspective?
6. Pastor challenged: "When you sin, ask yourself: 'Jesus, is that really how much I love you?'" How might this question transform our approach to temptation?
7. What does it mean to "go analog" with God? Share your current spiritual disciplines. What might need to change to prioritize uninterrupted time with God?
Part 3: Practical Holiness
8. Read Ephesians 6:10-18 together. Which piece of spiritual armor do you most need to strengthen right now? How can this group support you?
10. Discuss the call to "submit to authorities for the Lord's sake" (verses 13-15). How do we balance respectful submission with standing for biblical truth when they conflict?
11. "Honor all people. Love the brethren. Fear God. Honor the king." Which of these four commands is most challenging for you personally? Why?
This Week's Action Steps:
Choose at least 2-3 to implement this week:
1. Create a "time card" for kingdom work
- Track time spent: serving others, in God's Word, in prayer
- Goal: 5 hours serving people, 1 hour daily in Scripture
2. Go analog for your first hour each day
- No phone, computer, or electronic Bible
- Just you, a paper Bible, and God
3. Audit your media consumption
- What shows, music, or social media are you consuming?
- Does it reflect your identity as God's holy person?
- What needs to change?
4. Practice "living honorably"
- Speak respectfully about authorities (even when you disagree)
5. Share your testimony
- Tell at least one person this week how God has changed your life
- Focus on "proclaiming His excellencies"
6. Change your social media presence
- Post something about God's kingdom instead of self-promotion
- Share Scripture, worship moments, or testimonies of God's faithfulness
Accountability & Prayer
1. Share which action steps you're committing to this week
2. Exchange contact information for mid-week accountability check-ins
3. Pray specifically for each other:
- For strength to abstain from sinful desires
- For boldness to live differently
- For opportunities to proclaim God's excellencies
- For grace to honor authorities and love difficult people
