Life Group Questions - October 18th

Discussion Questions:

Remember: Historical and Biblical Context
2. The early believers in Ephesus had experienced genuine, powerful revival, and yet years later they were dealing with serious false teaching from people who had once been among them. Why do you think seasons of great spiritual growth are sometimes followed by seasons of great spiritual attack or confusion?
3. Pastor Robb noted that the believers receiving this letter did not have a complete Bible to reference. They were relying heavily on the Holy Spirit, on apostolic teaching, and on one another. What does that tell us about how God equips His people even in the absence of every resource we might want?

Reality: Deception and Discernment
4. Pastor Robb said he has never met anyone who introduced themselves by saying they were deceived or were trying to deceive others. How does that reality shape the way we should approach unfamiliar teaching, even when it sounds good or comes from someone we trust?
5. He shared a personal story about being deceived despite his experience and spiritual background. Have you ever been in a situation where you realized, after the fact, that something had pulled you away from truth or clarity? What did you learn from that experience?
6. Pastor Robb described spending time going down a rabbit hole of online content before recognizing it was leading him away from sound teaching. In an age of constant information, how do you personally guard your spiritual intake? What habits or practices have helped you?

Respond: The Three Tests
7. The Jesus Test asks whether a teaching affirms that Jesus Christ fully came in the flesh, fully God and fully human. Why is this particular doctrine so foundational that John makes it the first and primary test of spiritual truth?
8. The Personal Test centers on love. John writes that whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love (1 John 4:8). Pastor Robb was honest about how he used to approach love as something he had to manufacture through effort. How has your understanding of where genuine love comes from changed over time?
9. The Spiritual Test looks at the fruit of a teaching in a person's life. Does it produce humility, service, and obedience, or pride, self-focus, and a sense of superiority? Can you think of an example, either from your own life or from what you have observed, where the fruit of a teaching revealed its true source?

Rejoice: Confident Assurance
10. Pastor Robb closed by reading the Apostles' Creed and connecting it directly to the theological concerns John was addressing. What phrase or statement in the Creed carries the most personal meaning or weight for you right now, and why?
11. John's letter was written not primarily to correct the believers but to affirm them. He was essentially saying, you got it right, keep going. When is the last time you felt that kind of affirmation in your faith? Who in your life speaks that kind of encouragement over you?
12. The promise in 1 John 4:4 declares that the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. How does that truth speak to whatever you are personally facing right now, whether doubt, opposition, temptation, or a long-awaited promise that has not yet come to pass?

Closing Prayer Focus:
Close your group time by praying together over these three things:
  1. Gratitude for the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth and who lives inside every believer as a source of discernment and confident assurance.
  2. Humility to remain teachable, to test what we hear, and to hold fast to the truth of who Jesus is, fully God and fully human, crucified, risen, and coming again.
  3. Courage to speak truth, even when it costs something, and to love one another with the kind of love that can only come from God himself.
