Life Group Questions - October 11th

Discussion Questions
Opening Question:
  • When you hear the word "assurance" in the context of your faith, what comes to mind? Is it something you feel confident about, or does it create anxiety? Share honestly with the group.

Section 1 -- The Evidence of Truth Is Loving in Action
  • Pastor Rino said, "Come as you are and we will love you as we are all changing to be according to his word." How does that statement challenge the way you think about grace and growth?
  • What does it look like practically for love to be a "fruit" rather than just a feeling in your daily life? Can you think of a recent example where you saw this in yourself or someone else?
  • Jonathan Edwards said that holiness is the most admirable and sweetest thing to the saints, while the world has no sense of its goodness. Have you experienced a growing desire for holiness in your own life? What has that looked like?

Section 2 -- God Is Greater Than Your Heart
  • Pastor described the conscience as "a warning system for your soul." How well do you think you listen to your conscience? Are there areas where you have allowed it to become dulled or ignored?
  • What is the difference between conviction and condemnation in your own experience? How do you tell them apart in the moment?
  • Pastor shared a personal story about his missing wallet and his frustrated, unpolished prayer -- and how God answered it anyway. Have you ever had a moment where God met you in your frustration rather than waiting for you to clean up your attitude first? What did that teach you about Him?

Section 3 -- Confidence and Unhindered Prayer
  • Pastor said, "Are you approaching God like a defendant before a judge or like a child before a father?" Which posture more accurately describes how you typically come to God in prayer? What has shaped that posture?
  • He described how being in relationship with God changes what you ask for -- moving from self-focused requests toward kingdom-focused ones. Have you noticed that shift in your own prayer life? Where do you still struggle with it?
  • What does it mean to you that "prayer is a privilege of sonship"? How might that truth change the way you approach God this week?

Section 4 -- The Commandment: Faith and Love
  • Pastor Rino said that God is not asking you to hang out with everyone, but He is asking you to love everyone. Where is the line between loving someone and having genuine fellowship with them? How do you navigate that?
  • He challenged the group to consider loving "the unlovable" -- the neighbor who is difficult, the person on the outskirts of life. Who comes to mind for you? What is one concrete step you could take toward that person?

Section 5 -- Abiding in the Spirit
  • Pastor described the Holy Spirit not always as fire, but often as "a warmth that warms us to other people and to the heart of God." How have you experienced the Holy Spirit's presence in your life? Does that description resonate with you?
  • He described abiding as a continuous cycle: obedience leads to abiding, abiding releases the Spirit, and the Spirit empowers more obedience. Where do you feel you are in that cycle right now? Is there a place where the cycle feels broken or stalled?

Closing Reflection:
Pastor closed the sermon with this simple but profound statement: "The greatest prayer you can pray is, 'God, I pray that today my heart will lean more towards you than it will to the things of this world.'" Take a moment before closing your group time to pray that prayer together -- out loud, as a group. Then close by thanking God that He is greater than your heart, that He knows all things, and that He still calls you His child.
