Opening Question: Think about a time when someone showed you unexpected, practical love. What did that experience mean to you, and how did it affect your view of that person or of God?
Going Deeper:
- Pastor Rino described verse 10 as feeling like John "burped" — suddenly introducing love into a conversation about righteousness. Why do you think John connects love so closely to righteousness? What does that connection tell us about the nature of genuine faith?
- John uses Cain and Abel as the defining contrast between the two family groups in the world. Cain was not an atheist — he was a worshiper. What does this tell us about the danger of religious activity that is disconnected from a transformed heart?
- Pastor Rino said, "Do you want to know where you really are with God? Check your love meter." How does your love for others — including difficult or unlovable people — serve as a spiritual diagnostic? What does an honest check of your own love meter reveal?
- The sermon made a distinction between loving people who are like us and loving people who are different from us — people who vote differently, think differently, or have even been hostile toward us. Where do you find that kind of love most difficult to practice? What makes it hard?
- Pastor Rino was transparent about a moment at the driving range where he felt the Holy Spirit prompting him to speak to two young men and he did not act on it. Have you experienced a similar moment where you sensed a prompting to love someone and held back? What got in the way?
- The sermon emphasized that this quality of love cannot be generated from within ourselves through willpower or moral effort — it comes from Christ. How does that truth change the way you approach the command to love? Does it bring relief, or does it raise new questions for you?
- In verse 17, John challenges those who have material resources and close their hearts to a brother or sister in need. The sermon illustrated this with the story of the 2004 Chrysler 300 — a gift that was not just given to clear a driveway, but carefully prepared to be a genuine blessing. What is the difference between giving out of obligation and giving out of love? How can you tell which one is driving you?
Closing Prayer Focus:
Close your group time by praying together over these areas:
- That God would give each person a genuine capacity to love, not just a desire to try harder.
- That the Holy Spirit would make your group sensitive to the needs of people around you — inside and outside the church.
- That any walls of resentment, indifference, or hatred would be broken down by the love of Christ.
- That your love would be visible — in deed and in truth — to a world that desperately needs to see it.
